Instructions for authors


PUBLICATION RULES OF BALKAN MILITARY MEDICAL REVIEW

Balkan Military Medical Review (BMMR) is the official scientific publication of Balkan Military Medical Committee (BMMC), and published every three months. The clinical and experimental research articles, original case reports, and review articles in general and military medicine are published. Manuscripts are expected primarily to concern on military medicine. Non-military subjects are also welcome. But non-military subjects may subject to delay, since the military medical subjects have priority for publication.

A covering letter should accompany the manuscript, indicating the items below:

a. Stating that the paper has never been published or has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. The letter should be signed by all authors. The contributors' and copyright transfer form (see below) should also be submitted in original with the signatures of all the contributors.

b. The studies previously presented in a Congress can be accepted for publication. In this case, full title, date and venue of the congress should be indicated.

c. The submittal should cover the responsibility and permission of all the authors and it should strictly be signed by all of them.

d. The Approval Letter of the authority of the authors' institution should also be included (military authority if applicable).

e. Ethical committee approval report (if applicable).

Ethics of scientific publishing:

f. Please note that BMMR strictly adheres to ethical matters.

g. Plagiarism (stealing) of text from a previously published papers by another author is a serious offence, unless the material quoted is similarly indicated. Fraudulent data or data stolen from other authors is also unethical and will be treated accordingly.

h. Manuscripts should be original and should not had been published anywhere else. Failure to comply with this rule will be considered a double-publishing offence and treated appropriately.

i. Ethics of studies involving humans and animals: The editors draw the authors' attention to the Declaration of Helsinki for Medical Research involving Human Subjects and also to the Guiding Principles in the Care and Use of Animals (DHEW Publication, NIH, 80-23). Studies involving humans and animals or human or animal material should have appropriate ethical approval and the editors reserve the right to refuse publication on this basis.

j. In order to be published in the BMMR, approval certificate's copy of the institutional ethical committee must be added to scientific papers.

All manuscripts will be written in English. Official language of the BMMR is English. All manuscripts should be English spell checked.

Papers must be prepared complying with the following instructions:

The parts of a regular article should consist of the following sections: Title, Running title, Authors, Institute, Corresponding Address and e-mail, Summary, Key Words, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References. Title, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, and References should be written in capitals and centrified, and they should not be underlined.

k. Title: Should not exceed 25 words and should be specific and informative.

l. Running title: Should not exceed 50 characters.

m. Author(s) and Institute(s): Authors' line should consist of the first name, middle initials, and the last name of the author(s). The last name should be written in capitals. Academic degree of authors(s) will not be written. For the manuscript with more than one author and department or institution, it should be shown by an asterisk (*) after the last name(s) in the authors' line.

n. Corresponding Address: The name, address, phone and fax number (as will be dialed internationally) and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence is to be sent should be clearly written.

o. Summary: The aim of the study, setting, results and discussion should be clearly summarized in a minimum of 50 words or in maximum 200 words.

p. Key Words: Up to five key words should be selected from the chapter and subject titles of index medicus and readily be suitable for indexing purposes and computer programs. Keywords should be written in alphabetical order. (e.g.: Marrow transplantation for Fanconi Anemia: Conditioning with reduced doses of cyclophosphamide without radiation. Keywords: cyclophosphamide, Fanconi anemia, marrow transplantation).

q. Introduction: The aim of the study, other researches performed by other authors should be pointed out briefly. The institution and date of the study should be written. Introduction should not exceed two pages.

r. Materials and Methods: The materials, methods, interventions and the statistical analyses should be expressed in details. If the research is supported by a scientific institution or a fund, it should be expressed for the regular research articles.

s. Results: Findings obtained by the author(s) must be clearly stated.

i. Illustrations and Tables: Table(s) should be drawn on separate page(s) after references and numbered with roman numerals. llustrations and figures should be drawn on white glossy page(s) or printed with high quality printers (preferably laser)and numbered with arabic number(s) . The source and permission should be stated if figures or illustrations are taken from other published books or journals. Photographs should be printed on glossy paper and also must be scanned with 300 dpi and saved as jpeg format. All these materials (figures, illustrations, photographs) should be numbered on back pages and enclosed separately without fixation to printing pages. In the text, their space should be kept empty and the numbers of these materials must be written. A legend for each illustration, figure or photograph with a brief title and short explanation should be written on a separate page after tables. The Editor reserves the right to decide upon whether or not a figure needs to be reproduced in color.

ii. Units of measurement and abbreviations: Units of measurement should be in Systéme International. Standard units of measurements and chemical symbols of elements may be used without definition in the body of the paper. Abbreviations should be given in parenthesis after their first mention in the text, and used thereafter.

iii. Statistics: Inadequate or incorrect statistical analyses frequently cause rejection or delays in the review of manuscripts. If necessary, authors should seek advice from a professional statistician before the manuscript is submitted.

t. Discussion: Findings obtained should be compared with the findings of the other researchers, and the authors' opinion and suggestion(s) should be expressed.

u. Acknowledgements: Personal acknowledgements should precede those of institutions or agencies.

v. References: References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. If there are more than six authors, use first three authors and then, use et al.

i. Books, as references, should be written in the following order; last name and name of the section authors(s), title of the article, last name and name of the editor(s), name of the book, and number of the volume of the edition publisher (company-country), date, page number.

ii. Journals as references, should be written in the following order; last name and name of the author, title of the article, and abbreviation of the journal in the index medicus, volume and page numbers, the year of publication. If the journal is not included in the index medicus, full name of the journal should be written.

All manuscripts should be written in word.doc format only and in Times New Roman font 12.

Manuscripts should be printed on A4 pages. Double spaces should be left between the lines. Manuscripts should never exceed 15 pages (including the tables, illustrations and references) and 3 copies of papers should be submitted for publication.

All manuscripts should be saved in a disk, with manuscript title and the name of the first author written on the label. Disks should be update virus checked.

Electronic submission is also available and possible via (www.bmmr.info). In this manner, it is not necessary to sent three hard copies and diskette.

Subscription rates may apply.

BMMC Editorial Board Members constitute the advisory board of the journal. Scientists other than the current Editorial Board may be asked for review if necessary. Peer reviewing process is also in use. The editorial board has been authorized to refuse the manuscripts that do not comply with the publication rules.

Letters to the Editor:

Letters relating to previously published articles in the journal and the replies of the author(s) will be published in the "Letters to the Editor" section after consideration of the editorial board. Letters should not exceed one page and five references. Correspondence belonging to the "Letters to the Editor" section is carried out by the editorial board. The editor may also invite any experienced scientist on his/her field to write a letter to the editor.

Editorials, Short Notes and Reviews:

The same rules apply as "Letters to the Editor".

Proofs

Authors are sent page proofs for checking by the production editor approximately one week after acceptance of the article. Proofs are sent via NBs and should be checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt.

No direct submission to The Editor is allowed. In the manner of electronic submission, manuscripts may be submitted directly to the editor after the necessary permission is taken from the national board.

All corresponding will be made via National Boards (or in information of National Boards for electronic submission) for BMMC member countries.

Journal does not provide any free printed reprints. Reprints can be purchased at the time of submitting the proofs.
